Earning more in construction

A pay rise should always come with a higher level of service. Ready to renegotiate your rates? Good. First, ask yourself how you can contribute to that change. Are your skills at a high level? Has your performance improved recently?

When you apply for a new job in construction, be ready to answer:

• Why is your work worth more?
• Why are your skills better than other candidates'?
• How do you compete with other construction workers?
• What makes you stand out?

If you have worked in construction for years but only hold a Green CSCS card, are you really in a position to ask for more? The worst thing for your career is to stop upgrading your qualifications and stay on the same level for years.

Growing your skills is crucial. Nobody but you is responsible for the direction of your development and the level of your earnings. There are no shortcuts: the way to earn more in construction is to develop your skills and, at the same time, upgrade your qualifications.

If you have been working in construction for at least a year, you can register for an NVQ with Wataha. We offer NVQs that lead to Blue, Gold and Black CSCS cards.
